Well the amazing news is that I’ve been offered the opportunity to exhibit some of my photography at a local gallery.  Unfortunately there are costs involved in this honour and I need to weigh them up – the obvious costs being printing and framing, but I also need to hire the wall space (the lowest cost being a  6′ x 6′ area of wall) which has a two-week minimum hire charge.

My ego says hire the whole hall, print hundreds of pictures, leave them for six months and you’ll be a millionaire by then.  The reality is more like hire one 6′ x 6′ area for a month to six weeks and print out six strong images.

But how do I decide which pictures? Am I going to sell any of them?  How much will people be willing to spend on them? How much do I spend on framing?

This my dear friends of the blogosphere is where I am seeking your help…..

Please look through the pictures and let me have your comments on any or all of the following:
* which six prints I should go with;
* whether you would have them on your wall;
* how much would you be willing to pay for a framed copy of approx 10″x 8″ inches;
* should I go with a theme, wildlife as a whole/owls/big cats/Brighton etc. etc. etc.?

Please share this post around your friends – I will be giving away one personalised signed print (of your choice) to whomever writes the most helpful comment (not in the least bit impartial but it’s my competition) wherever in the world you may hail from.

I need to make some decisions in the next fortnight so that’s how long I’ll keep the initial run open for. Don’t forget to mention which print number you’d like as your prize.

Please feel to leave your comments below or you can go through the Facebook page or email them directly to rantingmrbunnychow@gmail.com

You see I am agonising over every aspect – I need your help!

Take care and thank you in advance

Mr Bunny Chow

P.S. I reserve the right to ignore all advice and take more pretty pictures between now and when the exhibition happens.

  1. love the angels (1 and 25), the owls (5.6 amd 7) and the beautiful scenes (15 – 19), and the banjo best — hard to choose though, but these are the ones that appeal to me
if I had to choose it would be 16 or 25 — what would I pay for framed — do not know–would think at least a hundred dollars, but I have really no frame of reference–good luck–what a wonderful opportunity–but from the quality of your work I am not surprised you were given this chance

  2. I’ve shared on G+ and Facebook, I have photographer friends. Siggestion… check online photo exhibitions to get an idea of what is “in”, what is selling… and at what prices!

My choices are listed below, in backward order because I was scrolling up as I noted the numbers down on a text doc.

    I like…
    24
    18
    14
    13
    12
    9
    can’t decide between 7 or 8 – I like them both
    6
    5
    3
    2
    1

    • thank you so much for sharing Michelle, I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before, may I be cheeky and ask how you found me?

      • Hi Mr Bunny Chow

I’ve been around a fair time, but rarely reply since I usually come here via my blog, which is a blogger one. Trying to sign in to wordpress from blogger always seems to play up for me, but this time I came in via an email update and it shot me straight into my Facebook account. Yeah! I love fast and easy. lol So… you know me (sort of), but as Michelle of CrowsFeet blog, ex Bulawayo living in Scotland. 🙂

      • Oh Michelle, I’m so sorry, of course I know who you are, I too don’t comment on your blog very often for the reverse reason. thanks for sticking around

  3. Emily Roesly says:

Image 6 was my favorite, then 24 then 22.

  4. rumpydog says:

I suggest you ask yourself these questions:

    1. What is motivation, to show my work or sell it?
    2. If I want to sell, what’s hot right now?
    3. If I want to be seen, which photos best express me?

If you want to sell, go with the dog. Dogs are hot right now.

  5. Julie Truman says:

    ok. choices would be
16 – sunset cos I love sunset pictures and they should be popular. All good but this is prob my fav.
7 – hard choice between the owls but I think this one
10 – the lion as have to have another wildlife one
11 – love the B&W leopard over the colour one
13 – the flower – nice alternative to the wildlife and sunsets
24 – for my more arty choice

Cost, personally I’m too broke at the mo but I would prob browse and see what is on offer and at what price. I paid £30 for a framed black and white print years ago, but depends on the cost of your framing. Maybe work out your costs, framing, printing etc then add what mark up you wnat to make eg 20% and see what it comes to.

  6. Julie Truman says:

ps my favourite would prob be the leopard no 11

  7. kiwigirl_1980 says:

As I have two weeks for this will have a ponder over my selection before passing them onto you. One question, on your wall are you allowed to put up a sign to market your work eg ‘more selection available from mrbunnychow.com’?

  8. Kate says:

Rob, I love all your photos.. I love the animal shots but I think this is already done way too many times. Anilamal Photos are everywhere… I love your landscape shots 15 20 14 and 13

  9. Lee Townsend says:

    I love number 13!

  10. I can’t pick one they are all so gorgeous 😀

  11. TBM says:

First of all, congrats. That’s pretty cool! As for how much, I really have no clue. I don’t buy a lot of artwork so I’m not familiar with the market and going rate. But I can tell you which photos appeal to me if that helps: 1, 10, 12, 15, 22. I wish you luck and keep us informed about your success!

  12. Isa Photos says:

I prefer No. 13 for its composition, colours, creativity….It is very delicate and soothing…and would see it in a lot of people’s homes and in offices….would make a lovely present to a friend, relative etc.

I do not know about pricing, it depends on the price and quality of your framing…I agree with comment of Rumpydog and Julie Truman 20% – 30% added to your cost….For selling, think of the type of the gallery you are exhibiting, the people who are going to come and see your photos…Do not think about what you like, what is best technically, but what people like to have in their homes, on their walls….Think of the people you know….their houses…what do they have on their walls…

Hope my comment is of help and wish you good luck and great success in the future…

  13. Matthew Durr says:

My six favorites (in no particular order):
6-If you can clean the noise up a bit
    13
    16
    21
    24
25-with a bit tighter crop on the statue itself
These give a good variety as far as subject matter, and are aesthetically pleasing. I could see these hanging on a wall. Good luck Rob!

  14. Rowan says:

    Hey Rob,

In my mind it helps to change how you view the artworks and take it from there. If you can see it simply as a product as opposed to an image that you have an attachment to, it’ll definitely help with selling the work, as hard as it can be to do!

I know that the images are beautiful but if you approach it the same way as you would selling oranges on a shelf you rent in the area, you’ll remove any emotion about your work and be able to make practical decisions.

Looking at it as a product you’d probably look at all the galleries in the area and determine what images they sell, what framing options they choose and what pricing they charge for a new artists work. Open galleries stick to what sells and if your offering is out of sync with that, your product probably will not sell.

If you can offer a product that does sell in the area then it stands to reason that you will also sell. More a case of identifying a demand and meeting it, rather than trying to create a demand for your product.

Either way doing it will be a fantastic learning experience re selling your photography, regardless of the outcome. I hope that you give it a burn and that it goes well. And if it doesn’t, just look at it as school fees!

    Cheers,
    Rowan

PS. Can’t give any opinions on image choice and price, they are all awesome images but I’m not in the target market!

  15. Fran says:

    My choice is 2, 13, 16, 20

  16. Jan says:

I am biased and think that they are all beautiful and interesting! My choices, however, would be 13, 15 thru 20. I would be very happy to have these on my wall. The cats and the owls are great but there are so many out there of the same subject. No idea on price. You have been given some good advice from others tho. 13 is my favourite! Lots of luck and keep at it.

  17. Dunx had a problem here in Zim with people wanting exclusivity guarantees. Things like “How do I know you won’t sell a bunch of the same to others – I don’t want ducks on my wall !”

  18. simixion says:

Hey Bunny Man (lol) : My top 6 are in order from 1st to last :

    12.15.22.3.9.10

    keep them coming …

  19. I would go with a theme. Either your animals, sunsets, or statues. If I had to pick from those, I think your big cat images are the most compelling. Sorry, I can’t really help with pricing, but the question I would ask myself regarding that is what is the local market like? what are other artists who are selling in this place asking for their work? Best of luck.

  21. Shem says:

for me 12,14 and 22… I like animals and it’s something that I would consider to have on a wall. It’s the matter of taste so I guess everyone would choose something else… It’s hard for me to pick 6 though as the other ones are not my kind of shots. I might consider one of the angels shots maybe….
Regarding to price it was always a problem of mine to price an art… I have problem to price my own pictures so I’m not going to be much of a help with that…
Keep up the good work mate 🙂
