this happens to me occasionally and I’m loath to ignore it because the thought behind it seems genuine, I’ve been nominated for another blog award, those of you readers unfamiliar with the blogosphere may think that this is a great honour and in some ways it is a recognition of what I do here, but there always has to be a but.

Blog awards are also much like the chain letters we’ve all received about the little boy in Ohio who’s been dying of something or other since 1984 and how no one has ever broken the chain, you know the ones, well yeah that’s how these blog awards work and I’m not someone who goes along with fulfilling the dream of little boys who’ve been dying for 30 years so I’m going to participate this time but only in part.

I was nominated for this award by wannabephotographer who’s a very kind and sweet lady and it’s for this reason alone that I’m going to play along a little bit.

So without further ado these are the rules

Image

Rules for receiving the Sunshine Award:

  • Include the award’s logo in a post or on your blog.
  • Answer 10 questions about yourself.
  • 10 other fabulous bloggers must be nominated.
  • Link your nominees to the post and comment on their blogs, letting them know they have been nominated.
  • Share the love and link the person who nominated you.The 10 Questions:
    1. Favourite colour: today I’m going with olive drab
    2. Favourite animal: Kudu cow yummy and pretty all in one
    3. Favourite number: 13
    4. Favourite non-alcoholic drink: Coffee
    5. Prefer Facebook or Twitter? Google+ but am sticking with Facebook because my Mum kinda understands it.
    6. My passion: My kids and photography
    7. Prefer getting or giving presents: prefer giving, receiving always makes me feel guilty and awkward
    8. Favourite pattern: houndstooth
    9. Favourite day of the week: I’m a full time dad, all days are roughly the same but Mrs BC is extra Grumpy on Monday mornings so I can say that’s my least favourite
    10. Favourite flower: Flame lilies otherwise known as gloriosa superba the national flower of Zimbabwe and darn purdy too.

Ten bloggers who deserve The Sunshine Award!:

  • yeah well I’m not going to pass this one along, I told you I was mean and grumpy and unwilling to pass on the feelings of guilt.

Otherwise, all is quiet on the western front, The Monkey Boy is full of cold and miserable but otherwise not much to report.

Please keep the comments coming on my previous post.

Hi all

I'm back ...........................

Leaving the Indian Ocean behind us we drove steadily westwards passing the famous Uluguru Mountains.  There are a bunch of special birds up there including the Uluguru Bush-shrike.  Unfortunately it is a long hard and arduous climb and as ANBM had a triple by-pass some months previously it was deemed unwise for us to attempt the climb.

Hi all

When we were in Chizarira ANBM mooted the idea of us going to the 13th Pan-African Ornithological Congress. By road !

He kept up the pressure and suddenly we were definitely going. With a fully packed vehicle, passports, GPS and some maps we left Harare at 04h00 one morning and entered Mocambique at Nyamapanda and by 09h30 we were in Tete on the Zambezi river.

the long awaited story of my fathers Arusha trip

Another classic of the logic of a nearly 3-year-old.

“Daddy my arms sore” why is your arm sore my darling? “Because it’s hurting”

you just can’t argue with that sort of logic

have a great weekend

Hi all

We are nearly done.  You must be exhausted by now.  We certainly were !

AJS and I got back to Harare quite late in the afternoon of the 21st of September.

The next day we went shopping for beer and water.  Daz arrived at about 13h00 and we set off northwards, in his Honda CRV, on the…

Hi again

At last after weeks of neglecting those of my followers who are birders I can get back to the core subject of this blog.

This, however, does not mean that the marathon journey is over !!  No it is not.

Whilst in Chizarira CvC took some amazing photo's of birds and has very generously agreed to share them with you all.

Hi again

It is certainly time I caught up with my posts here as there is so much happening I am in serious danger of falling way behind !

When you were last listening (reading) we had just arrived at the entry gate to Chizarira - the Hidden Gorges in remote north-western Zimbabwe.

First of all lets deal with vehicles.  We are all now quite familiar with the dear old Mazda Bongo that has carried us so far.

Hi all

The last time I left you we were just out of Lupane having visited the Allan Wilson Memorial.  And we were heading North.

Back to Hwange National Park's Main Camp!    We were to meet up with two other travellers - delightful ladies - CvC and CH.

We had a delightful dinner - thanks GJW - and slept like logs.

I have been to Gibraltar a couple of times due to friends working and living there. Here are my favourite photos.

Bay of Gibraltar photos at Sunset.

Gibraltar : Europa Point

My favourite photo below, Europa point with Morocco in the background.

Gibraltar viewed from Spain.

Please check out this blog by an old school friend of mine, he's a talented photographer and privaleged enough to be able to dine in some of Paris's finest restaurants.

howdy friends family and interweb friends, I have been blogging for going on a year now and shared my rants, pictures, woes and joys with you the greater world and wanted to garner some opinion on what you all feel about the big bad world wide web, do you think it’s relatively safe to share all sorts of details about your life across your blog, Facebook, Twitter, G+ etc, do you take any precautions like using a nom de plume and never posting pictures of your kids or do you prefer to hide in the background and just observe everyone else’s drunken ramblings?

I personally fall somewhere between all of those taking some solace in the enormity of the web making me relatively anonymous or at least unattractive to creeps and weirdo’s who might want to track me down and seek retribution or do naughty things with my nether region or god forbid the nether regions of my family.

Again this may be wishful thinking but I personally feel there is more risk from strangers lurking in dark alleyways just waiting to pounce when I least expect it, this is probably not an ideal fear as these same dark alleyways are where I do so much of my photography although admittedly I am invariably attached via a leash to a very vicious looking dog and am scruffy and scowl a lot at just about everyone not just strangers.

Anyway this is becoming a bit of a ramble so please vote below or share your thoughts in the comments section.
